Why it exists
The Dutch salderingsregeling — the rule that lets you offset the surplus solar power you feed back against your electricity bill — ends on 1 January 2027. The calculator works out what that costs you per year, what a home battery would save, the battery capacity it would take, and how long it would take to pay for itself.
Until now, a household with solar panels could feed surplus power back to the grid and have it deducted from what it drew later, which made the timing of production and consumption largely irrelevant. Once that offsetting ends, the gap between what you are paid for exported power and what you pay for imported power starts to matter, and storing your own production instead of exporting it becomes a financial question rather than an environmental preference. Whether a battery is worth it then depends on the specifics of the household, which is exactly what a calculator is for.
